{"id":116,"date":"2021-06-17T10:02:57","date_gmt":"2021-06-17T17:02:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.chime.me\/www-truepropertymanagers-com\/?p=116"},"modified":"2021-06-17T10:02:57","modified_gmt":"2021-06-17T17:02:57","slug":"airbnb-plans-to-prevent-landlords-from-profiting-off-pandemic-evictions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vm03.axencloud.com\/subh\/curb\/airbnb-plans-to-prevent-landlords-from-profiting-off-pandemic-evictions\/","title":{"rendered":"Airbnb&#8217;s Plan to Prevent Pandemic Profits"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-119\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.chime.me\/www-truepropertymanagers-com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2037\/2021\/06\/Airbnb-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Airbnb is implementing a new policy to prevent landlords from using its service as the moratorium on evictions expires this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginning Tuesday (June 16), the company will prohibit landlords from listing properties where they evicted tenants for failure to pay rent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Airbnb says the policy will be in effect until the end of the year to ensure that landlords aren\u2019t forcing out renters to profit off short-term rentals during a public health crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company said it would work with cities to identify properties where renters were pushed out after being protected under the moratorium as the country braces for a wave of evictions come the end of June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An estimated 14 percent of adult renters in the United States\u00a0are behind on payments and there are delays in disbursing federal emergency aid,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/click.icptrack.com\/icp\/relay.php?r=70365747&amp;msgid=618457&amp;act=D21E&amp;c=841722&amp;destination=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cbpp.org%2Fresearch%2Fpoverty-and-inequality%2Ftracking-the-covid-19-recessions-effects-on-food-housing-and&amp;cf=5462&amp;v=2a864ae096c4806d167a1d36d79ddde5414ae24b71ec8afef8fc568f40024e37\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to data\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Airbnb\u2019s tremendous growth over the past decade has put it at the center of some controversy,\u00a0including accusations that short-term rentals have driven up rents and encouraged tourists to vacation in residential neighborhoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allegations that Airbnb rentals were being used for parties during the pandemic fueled the animosity,\u00a0leading the company to institute a ban on gatherings of more than 16 people at its rentals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Airbnb also canceled and blocked all reservations in the Washington metro area around the inauguration earlier this year, amid efforts to secure the U.S. Capitol following the Jan. 6 insurrection. The company also has banned accounts for many people involved in hate groups and the Capitol riot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet Airbnb\u2019s latest policy could be challenging to enforce. Airbnb says it\u2019s addressing this through a new portal built to enable governments to manage short-term rental policies.
